Many animals use poison as their weapon. The toxicity will affect their predators and also humans. But why doesn’t poison affect them? The key is 2 strategies.
First is, the secure storage of compounds. Some animals have an adamant chamber in their system. The room will act as a safe and will not affect its body.
Second is the evolution of resistance. For instance, poison dart frogs prey on poisonous arthropods like ants and accumulate poison called alkaloids. Frogs can dynamically apply a genetic change to their molecule and prevent alkaloids to attack their body and build a neurotoxic defense. Interestingly, not only poisonous animals can develop resistance but predators and prey can too. For example, some snakes had genetically evolved to be able to eat strong poisonous salamanders but on the other hand, salamanders also evolved to have a stronger poison. As a consequence, resistance to poison has evolved along as poison does too.
There are other animals that had evolved to adapt to poison or use the predator’s poison as their shield. However, some are still considered a mystery.
