What do you imagine when you hear the word dumplings? Where do you think they came from?

Actually, it is still a mystery where it originally came from. It is said that Turkish people who lived in western China started spreading from Turkey to China. In Turkey, because of Muslim culture, they stuff lamb instead of pork and season them with multiple spices. They call it manti.

On the other hand in China, it was first documented on paper by poet Xi. He called it mantou. Ever since mantou transformed into various kinds of dumplings and spread all over China.

Dumpling is an English word meaning “little lumps” and originally it was used for dough balls dropped in soup. Interestingly they did not have stuffing in them but they just fit, nonetheless.

In other countries, there are similar dishes such as Russian pelmeni and the larger pierogi and vareniki, eaten in Poland and Ukraine. In Japan, they have gyoza which came from China. In Italy, they have dumpling-like stuffed pasta.

As you can see, there are lots of varieties of dumplings in the world. Each has its own history and roots. We should appreciate the fact that we can enjoy a variety of dumplings today.

質問

What kind of dumplings do you like?

I like wanton. Wanton has thinner skin than Chinese dumplings and it can easily dissolve in your mouth. We eat it as wanton soup or wonton ramen.
